Vitals SmartShopper Expands to Millions of Consumers in 2018

Program Gives Consumers Control Over Health Care Costs Through Shopping and Cash Rewards

NEW YORK, January 17, 2018 – This January, over 180 more employers are offering Vitals SmartShopper, a proven engagement and incentive program, to their employees, now serving over 2 million consumers. When it comes to health care, people often pay more than they should for everyday medical procedures and exams. Those costs come out of a patient’s pocket – and the employer who subsidizes their insurance.

Employers are finding ways to make their employees smarter about their health care choices by giving them cost tools, quality information and incentives to help them choose the best fit care at the lowest cost. SmartShopper has provided significant savings on health care costs for employers over the last few years. In fact, SmartShopper has reduced medical spending for employers by over $40 million in the last three years – and employers shared $4.6 million with employees in cash rewards. Some employers have seen a reduction of over 2 percent in their health care cost trend.

“Today, there is no reason consumers shouldn’t know the price of routine, non-emergency care,” said Heyward Donigan, CEO and President of Vitals. “Putting consumers in the driver’s seat for making informed health care decisions will create a competitive health care marketplace that ultimately lowers costs for everyone.”

SmartShopper helps alleviate the sting of high cost care. For instance, members who shopped for an MRI saved on average $563, while members who shopped for physical therapy saved $1,929 on each session.
